Editorial Reviews

The Malaysian agricultural sector has come a long way since Malaysia achieved its independence fifty years ago and has been painted with various mixes of strategies driven by goals which shifted according to the demands of time. Its history is unique and rich with experiences, both failures and successes. A chronological review of the sector’s development indicates an evolution of policies and strategies that were bold and creative which brought the Malaysian agriculture to what it is today.

This book is an attempt to revisit the Malaysian agricultural development since independence amid rapid industrialization, technological advancement and globalization. It focuses on the transformational issues faced by the sector in adjusting itself to the changes that surround from within and without.  It is hoped that this review of the sector would provide some retrospective insights and understanding on the issues, problems and challenges faced by the sector.

This book contains 5 sections; i.e:

Section I: Macro Perspectives of the Malaysian Agriculture,
Section II: Pertinent Issues in Agriculture
Section III: Sector Analysis
Section IV: Industry Enablers and
Section V: Future Direction

Section I traces the development path of the Malaysian agriculture, policy and experiences since the colonial days until the early 21st Century. The pertinent issues in agriculture are described in Section II. These issues include environment, food security and safety, sustainable agriculture, resource legislation, halal products and agricultural community. Section III: Sector Analysis discusses the major issues and challenges facing selected sub-sectors in agriculture which include export crops sub-sectors (palm oil, rubber, cocoa, pepper), forestry, livestock, food crops (paddy, fruits and vegetables) and floriculture. Section IV: Industry Enablers reviews the major drivers of the sector such as agricultural labour, marketing, communication and extension. The role of biotechnology as the future driver of hi-tech agriculture is also discussed in this section. The final section concludes the book by providing the probable future landscape of the Malaysian agriculture based on the review and analysis of the performance and issues besetting the sector, fifty years after independence.
